A big, five-seater family saloon is hardly what would come to mind for most people when they visualise a Porsche. Yet, spurred on by the massive success of the Cayenne SUV, the Panamera took the fight to rivals in another arena where they perhaps least expected it from the Stuttgart car-maker. Available with a choice of three engines, the three-litre V6 diesel - sourced from Audi - was the best-seller in the UK at least, thanks largely to its claimed fuel economy of 45mpg. This was offered alongside two petrol plants, a 3.6-litre V6, and a 4.8-litre V8, both with twin turbos. Soon after the launch, a hybrid model, with both a three-litre V6 petrol and a 1.7kWh electric motor, came on stream. Three models, the S, Hybrid and Diesel, are rear-wheel drive, while the 4, 4S and GTS have the Porsche Traction Management all-wheel-drive system. A facelift in 2013 saw the front and rear bumpers redesigned, and the introduction of an E-hybrid model, emitting a claimed 71g/km of CO2. This was soon accounting for 9 per cent of all Panamera sales.
